# Add/Edit Policy

This page creates a retention policy, or opens an existing one for editing when you arrive from the **Edit Policy** action. The two modes use the same form. The difference is that editing preselects the tags already linked to the policy, and saving replaces that set with whatever is selected when you submit.

| Field          | Description                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Policy Name | The name the policy is listed and selected under. Required. |
| Retention Tags | The retention tags the policy contains. More than one can be chosen, and the drop down is populated from the tags that already exist in the selected tenant, each listed as its name followed by its type in brackets. Only existing tags can be picked, so create the tag first on [Add/Edit Tag](/user-documentation/email/administration/exchange-retention/tags/tag.md) if it is not in the list. |

{% hint style="info" %}
The tag list you submit replaces the policy's existing links rather than adding to them, so removing a tag from the selection removes it from the policy.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.cipp.app/user-documentation/email/administration/exchange-retention/policies/policy.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
