> For the complete documentation index, see [llms.txt](https://docs.cipp.app/llms.txt). Markdown versions of documentation pages are available by appending `.md` to page URLs; this page is available as [Markdown](https://docs.cipp.app/user-documentation/email/administration/exchange-retention/tags.md).

# Tags

A retention tag sets what happens to mail of a given age, and it takes effect only once it is linked to a retention policy that is applied to a mailbox. This page lists the retention tags in the selected tenant, alongside [Policies](/user-documentation/email/administration/exchange-retention/policies.md).

## Table Details

The properties returned are for the Exchange Online PowerShell command `Get-RetentionPolicyTag`. For more information on the command please see the [Microsoft documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/powershell/module/exchangepowershell/get-retentionpolicytag).

For an explanation of what each tag type covers and what each retention action does, see the Microsoft guidance on [retention tags and policies](https://learn.microsoft.com/exchange/security-and-compliance/messaging-records-management/retention-tags-and-policies).

## Table Actions

<table><thead><tr><th>Action</th><th>Description</th><th data-type="checkbox">Bulk Action Available</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Edit Tag</td><td>Opens <a data-mention href="/pages/IcQ2sy8EUlUddRn315YW">/pages/IcQ2sy8EUlUddRn315YW</a> for the selected tag.</td><td>false</td></tr><tr><td>Delete Tag</td><td>Opens a modal to confirm you want to delete the tag. A tag that is still linked to a retention policy cannot be deleted, and the results panel names the policies using it, so remove it from those policies first.</td><td>true</td></tr></tbody></table>

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.cipp.app/user-documentation/email/administration/exchange-retention/tags.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
